Oh, hey there, my name is Evan Hardy. I have been working in a variety of outdoor professions for over a decade and have a passion for all things outdoors. I hope to make the outdoors more accessible to others through this site. The goal is to give tips, advice, share experiences, and create a space to learn and develop outdoor skillz.
Credentials
Here is a shortlist of experiences and educational background as a way to briefly provide some sense for why I would be credentialed to host such a site as Outdoor Skillz.
A snapshot of my professional experiences includes: Backcountry Canoe Guiding in the Boundary Waters, Quetico, Crown Lands, and the Atikaki Provincial Wilderness, open water kayak guide on Lake Superior, Crew Leader for the Conservation Corps in Northern Minnesota, Field Specialist for the Conservation Corps in the Twin Cities of Minnesota, downhill ski instructor, public educator for the Department of Natural Resources of Michigan, Disaster Response Planning Chief for FEMA through Americorps, formerly backcountry first responder certified, Leave No Trace Master Educator, and am an Eagle Scout, among other things.
I also have a Bachelor of Science from Northern Michigan University and a Masters of Education from the University of Minnesota.
Who I am…
The outdoors is something that brings positivity to my world. It is also how I met my partner, who will also be contributing. I met her as a guide in Ontario, Canada. I saw her sanding down a kevlar canoe for a patch job with an orbital sander and thought, ‘I’m gonna marry that woman.’ We are married with a little one on the way now.
My parents are definitely responsible for stoking a love for the outdoors. I also have my charlie guide family, most of which are Alumni of Northern Tier, the Scouting High Adventure Outfitter we all guided for. All of which have a wealth of knowledge and experience to pull from. To put it briefly, I have a lot of people to be thankful to for enriching the outdoor adventures I have.
